Derrick James is a jazz saxophonist and composer. He is a member and assistant musical director of the Atlanta-based Black Gold Orchestra. Previously he served in the US Army for 23 years as part of West Point's Jazz Knights. Over his career as a studio and performing musician, James has worked with a variety of artists including Chaka Khan, Billy Cobham, Prince, Whitney Houston, Michael Bolton, Jon Faddis, Adam Nussbaum, Donna Summers, Mose Allison, Bobby Kimball, Robert Rodriguez, Buddy Williams, and Stefon Harris. He has also released two albums as leader.

Trivia

Derrick James released his first album."Think Positive" at the age of 26. Derrick James was the featured saxophone player in the 2021 Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect." Derrick James has performed at many jazz festivals including The Playboy Jazz Festival, The Hampton Jazz Festival and The Montreux Jazz Festival.

Early Life

The son of a gospel singer, and grandson of a jazz trombonist, Derrick James grew up surrounded by jazz and blues. He began playing the alto saxophone at age 8 and soon grew into a talented musician. Following high school, James attended the Berklee College of Music and also studied at Long Island University, the University of Miami, and SUNY Purchase College earning both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Jazz Studies.
