Jeremy Pelt, a versatile jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator, initially gained recognition for his straight-ahead playing in the early 2000s. Over the years, he incorporated fusion, funk, and Latin influences into his musical repertoire. He has worked with a variety of artists including Roy Hargrove, Ravi Coltrane, Greg Osby, and Cassandra Wilson, among others. Pelt has released over 20 albums as leader and appears as a sideman on dozens of others. In 2021, in conjunction with his quintet album, "Griot:This is Important!" Pelt released a collection of interviews with jazz artists titled "Griot: Examining the Lives of Jazz's Great Storytellers." In addition to his busy recording and touring schedule, Pelt is on faculty at William Paterson University.
Jeremy Pelt was voted Rising Star on the trumpet, five years in a row by Downbeat Magazine. Jeremy Pelt contributed a track to the album "Black Lives - from Generation to Generation" which features 25 musicians from the United States, Caribbean and Africa who each composed a song to fight against systemic racism in the world. Jeremy Pelt can be heard signing on the final track of his 2022 album "The Art of Intimacy, Vol. 2: His Muse."
Jeremy Pelt was born in 1976 and grew up in Southern California. He studied classical trumpet as a child, but after hearing Miles Davis dedicated himself to jazz. Pelt played in his high school jazz ensemble and went on to study improvisation and film scoring at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Following graduation in 1998, he moved to New York City and soon began playing with the Mingus Big Band.
